Shadow the hedgehog is a tragic character in many ways. On top of getting shoved in a box for 50 years and losing his memory, he likely didn't have a super great life on the ark.
He had stress put on him by being a hedgehog in space with no access to nature or a family (outside of maria). I doubt such a small sample size of people to interact with was good for his health (actually i think there were other people on the ark but for this headcanon rant im ignoring them). I'd like to think the isolation made him socially inept. Thats sll good n fine but then he lost maria, the one person he was really close to. Losing maria hit him hard. Could his amnesia be his mind trying to blot out the memory? He does get traumatic flashbacks in nearly ever portrayal of him so hmm.
Since project shadow was made to provide a cure for maria, shadow was a lab animal. The ultimate life form is well. Ultimate, resistant to disease and physical pain. However, shadow is not a stranger to mental pain. The mental stress from being experimented on constantly fucked him up good.
Remember when shadow at the end of sa2 thought that sonic might be the actual ultimate lifeform? I think about that a lot. Shadow, post 50 year slumber, has only two things to base himself on: maria's wish and being the ultimate lifeform. Thats why he is constantly spouting garbage about being the ultimate lifeform and sonic being the faker. The conclusion that he comes to at the end of sa2 shows that he has grown as a person. The ultimate lifeform is meant to be the most powerful being in existence. He was created to save maria, but if thats the case why did shadow fail to save her? He can't think about that now. He needs to carry out maria's wish to redeem himself. He doesn't realize that he can't do it alone. He needs sonics help. When I look at shadow at the beginning of sa2 i see a person who had suffered from self hatred and hid it from others (and himself) by feigning confidence. This is reason i think shadow suffers so hard from identity issues in subsequent games.
